Waynesville Main Street Diner is housed in one of those buildings, a structure that has seen nearly a century of town life. Built in 1923, it was once home to A&P Grocery, the town’s largest grocery store. Over the years, it evolved along with the town, serving as a beauty parlor, a men’s haberdashery, an office supply store, and most famously, Whitman’s Bakery—a local favorite known for its fresh-baked breads and pastries.
If you’ve ever noticed the slight difference in levels inside the diner, there’s a reason for that. The building is two separate storefronts that were eventually connected together, a reminder of the many hands and businesses that shaped this space before it became what it is today.
Main Street itself has a rich history. Originally a residential road, it gradually became Waynesville’s commercial and social hub, lined with general stores, banks, boarding houses, doctor’s offices, and even funeral parlors. As the town grew, so did Main Street’s role in daily life, and in 2005, the district was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its 35 significant buildings.
